About Lake Palace
The Lake Palace is located on the Jag Niwas Island which provides a natural
foundation for the Palace. This island was founded by Maharana Jagat Singh
in the year 1754 and as such the island got its name from him. The palace
was also built by Maharan Jagat Singh and served as a summer palace for the
royal family. The palace covers almost the entire area of the rocky island
and emerges from the middle of Lake Pichola in Udaipur. The beauty of the
palace is unsurpassed with its reflection in the clear water making for a
splendid view.

By the latter half of the 18th century, this wonderful palace started
loosing its beauty as well as significance. It was during this period that
few more additions were made to the palace, however these additions still
could not revive the old glory of the palace. Finally in 1960s, Maharan
Bhagwat Singh decide to convert this palace into a hotel so as to retain its
splendour. Today, a part of this marvellous palace has been converted into a
five star hotel and the visitors who come here have spectacular sunrise
welcoming them every morning during their stay.
Architecture of the Lake Palace
The Palace has been built of pure white marble with elegantly decorated 83
rooms. The beauty of the rooms are enhanced by the use of cusped arches,
inland stones of pink, green lotus leaves and painted mirrors. There are
apartments within the palace like the Bada Mahal, Khush Mahal, Ajjan Niwas,
Phool Mahal and Dhola Mahal. The Khush Mahal or the Palace of Happiness was
occupied by the Maharanis of the royal family and is the most beautiful room
which provides for an excellent view of sunset at the break of dusk. The
Palace has a swing right in the middle. The upper room of the palace is
perfectly round in shape with a diameter of 21 m. The courtyard of the
palace is lined with columns, pillared terraces, fountains and gardens which
adds to the beauty of the palace.
